Life and artistic work of J.D. Kirszenbaum
J.D. Kirszenbaum’s nephew, Nathan Diament, will talk about the extraordinary life and the artistic work of his grand-uncle. The Polish born artist (1900-1954) represents a generation of artists who left Eastern Europe due to an increasingly hostile environment. Following the Jewish emancipation they seized new opportunities, turned away from religion, and engaged in politics. Kirszenbaum studied at the "Bauhaus" in Weimar in the mid 1920s under Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Lyonel Feininger. He became one of the important caricaturists in the German press under his nickname Duwdiwani. In 1933, Kirszenbaum fled from the Nazis to Paris together with his wife and there became a Member of the "École de Paris". About 600 of Kirszenbaum's works were destroyed by the Nazis during the occupation of France. Nathan Diament has committed himself to restore the artist’s legacy.
